About Black Boy Inn

The Black Boy Inn, set deep in the evocative Royal Borough of Caernarfon, has been a welcome retreat for weary travellers for centuries. Built circa 1522, it is one of the oldest inns in North Wales.

Located in Northgate Street, the Black Boy Inn is one of the few remaining free houses owned by an independent family business in the United Kingdom. It has load bearing walls of up to one and a half metres thick, and four exterior signs each showing a 'black buoy' on one side and a 'black boy' on the other.

There are at least three theories to explain the origins of its name. One relates to a black boy brought into the country on a ship, another suggests it is related to a navigational buoy which existed in the harbour in the early days of the Inn, and the third refers to the nickname given to Charles II by his mother and the fact that Royalists met here secretly at that time.

At the Black Boy Inn, the locals’ favourite, diners are offered a wealth of choice and flavours. Depending on your mood, taste or occasion you can choose between our hearty à la carte restaurant menu and our chalkboard of seasonal specials. we pride ourselves on our traditional real ale bars, complete with low ceilings, heavy oak beams and thick stone walls, enticing visitors to sample locally brewed Welsh ales and Local lager, and also offering a comprehensive wine list to excite the connoisseur.

Excellent in every detail, great food and customer service! This was the most memorable few days of our holiday and I would return any time! We arrived late, wet and cold (wife's idea to rent bikes for the day - huh!). However, the staff made sure there was hot food for us even though we got there after the the normal kitchen closing time. It's that sort of considerate service that money can't buy.

The Black Boy has earned the Cask Marque award for the quality of their ales. They also featured in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide. The bar area is quite small and the rest of the pub is really dedicated to food. And not surprisingly, it's extremely popular with the locals. Marius, the chef, and his team create amazing unfussy but skillful dishes using quality local ingredients and it shows.

If you get a chance to visit (stay) at The Black Boy, don't hesitate. You'll not regret it.
