The Howgate is an exciting Restaurant and Bistro in Midlothian. The long, low building was originally stabling for race-horses and more recently a dairy, producing a wide range of Howgate cheeses. Now refurbished, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. An open log fire in the Bistro sets the scene

Many balloon ascents were made from about 1784 onwards, and one Walter Powell ascended from Malmesbury and disapppeared without trace about that time.
