About The Howgate Restaurant & Bistro

The Howgate is an exciting Restaurant and Bistro in Midlothian. The long, low building was originally stabling for race-horses and more recently a dairy, producing a wide range of Howgate cheeses. Now refurbished, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. An open log fire in the Bistro sets the scene while the Restaurant is cosy and a little more formal.

Menus change regularly, and offer traditional dishes, along with some modern style and something for the more adventurous. Starters range from home-made fishcakes and parcels of goats cheese, to warming soups, fresh mussels and Italian Ciabatta. Good use is made of the charcoal grill for salmon as well as locally produced beef, lamb and venison. The selection of desserts offers tempting and inventive variations on popular favourites such as Banoffee Pie, Crème Brûlée, the local and famous Luca's Ice Cream and of course, our very own Howgate Cheeses.

A wide and varied choice of dishes are available for lunch and dinner every day of the week. Our extensive range of wines and spirits ensures the satisfaction of every palate.

The Howgate Restaurant is also able to offer exclusive private dining facilities for parties of 10 - 50 by prior arrangement. We are keen to organise menus specifically for the requirements of our individual customers just as soon as you would like to talk to us. We are experienced in organising celebratory meals or conference and business meetings

Hard to find but worth the effort. The atmosphere is warm & cosy, both in the restaurant and the bistro. The food is exactly the same in both so just go where you are most comfortable.

Put very simply, the steak here is truly excellent and they understand the word 'blue'. The cullen skink is a meal in itself and the chef has invented some really interesting desserts! The staff are old fashioned in the best sort of way - courteous and professional to a fault. Very Highly Recommended
