About The Holly Bush Inn

The Holly Bush Inn, Salt, Stafford. Award winning food in one of Englands oldest pubs. Staffordshire dining pub of the year & British food pub of the year. Serving scrumptious food and quaffable ales in a relaxed environment with a warm welcome and friendly staff.

Our scrumptious food, quaffable ales, wonderful wines and warm hospitality have become the benchmark for quality across the land amongst the distinguished and the discerning. Our dedicated staff are here to ensure your enjoyment of the finest a traditional pub has to offer and we hope that all our viewers on the web will have the chance to visit The Holly Bush in person sooner or later.

The historic Holly Bush Inn is generally recognised as being the second licensed pub in the country. Licensing of public houses began in the reign of Charles II (1660 - 1685) so the Holly Bush must have been well established at that time but its origins are claimed to reach as far back as 1190. In the second half of the 17th Century there would have been about thirty houses in the village. To the North of village the road that is now the A51 was the main 18th Century stage coaching route from London to Liverpool. The nearby Trent and Mersey canal was constructed in the 1770s. It is fascinating to think of all the people that have partaken some refreshment within the Holly Bush walls over the years.

an aleged revamp has turned a national gem into ikea at lunchtime. awful.the intimate booths with padded seats have been replaced by hardwood benches, more like a bus stop whoever signed off on all this dreadful mess should be shot its a crime.whats happened at the bush is beyond belief it was mine and my families friday night but now, after one visit, its cold slippery floor and benches and floodlighting, after 50 years of using the gem as it was i'll not be returning, the villiage residents hate it aswell.

They don't take bookings here, so get there early because after about 6:30pm you will almost certainly have a long wait. Nevertheless, the service is quick and the portions are 'substantial' so the starters are probably above and beyond most people's needs. If the weather is fine there is a large outdoor area to eat in as well.

All the food is ordered from the bar so don't expect lots of personal service, but staff are very helpful when needed. Good selection of drinks.

The Holly Bush Inn has a lovely friendly atmosphere, the staff are attentive and polite and the pub (and gardens) are well kept. The food is excellent quality and very reasonably priced, especially at lunch times. The dishes are all homemade using local produce and there is a good selection to suit all tastes. The 'specials' board changes daily, so there is always something different to try. Huge selection of real ales for the connoisseurs or, if not, the house wine is very acceptable.
