About The Groes Inn

Set in the beautiful North Wales countryside, The Groes is a wonderful example of a traditional British Inn. Blending the warm welcome of a local pub with delicious food, excellent service and a comfortable bed, this historic Inn has been welcoming visitors for over four centuries. With fourteen luxurious bedrooms and an award winning menu, The Groes Inn is the perfect place to visit for a week, a weekend, a special night away or simply a meal and a drink.

The Groes Inn was originally a small two-storey house of fifteenth century construction. As the Inn flourished in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was modernised and extended, being re-roofed in the eighteenth century. The interior contains some sixteenth or seventeenth century timbers and walls may be of sixteenth century origin. Over the centuries the Groes Inn has been used as a commercial inn for business and court transactions.

It continued to be known as the “Commercial Inn” at Groesynyd in the nineteenth century when the Hon. Arthur Charles, fourth Duke of Wellington, grandson of the Iron Duke, witnessed the purchase of the Inn in 1889, an event commemorated by the Wellington Room upstairs at the present Groes Inn. The actual deeds signed by Wellington can be found at the top of the stairs.

The Groes Inn is in a stunning location and has a wonderfully warm atmosphere, particularly when it's winter and you get a table near to the big open fire. Our food was served promptly with a smile and the Welsh Rarebit starter does them proud. AND draft cider too (Stowford Press) - liquid bliss!

Beef and mushroom pie and a plate of liver and bacon finished the job nicely for us... and they are one of the few places I've found who know how to cook liver properly! None of your solid rubber stuff that you can't even get your teeth into!

A great experience that I shall be very happy to repeat next time I am passing.
