About The Square and Compasses

The Square and Compasses is a delightful, traditional public house located at Fuller Street in the parish of Fairstead. Set in beautiful countryside the pub is believed to date from about 1652. Originally two farmer's cottages, the building retains a wealth of original features with exposed beams throughout and inglenook fireplaces.

The Square and Compasses has been lovingly restored and refurbished both internally and externally to a very high standard. Inside, the cosy atmosphere and various styles of eclectic furniture and antiques ensures your comfort in which to enjoy a drink or two and maybe something to eat, in the company of family and friends.

Outside, there is a front garden area with seating where you can enjoy the warm summer sun and the scenic views over the Essex Way. A mediterranean style decked dining area is to the side. At the rear is a large car park. Look out for the nineteenth hole golf tee!

Owners, Victor and Susan have returned this old public house to its status as a major feature in the day to day life of the village, welcoming people seeking a friendly, traditional countryside pub with character and excellent customer service. In fact, The Square and Compasses is now one of a dying breed; a privately owned Freehouse, actually run by its owners.

We offer a traditional range of facilities from a cosy bar, comfortable eating area, private dining room and a selection of casked conditioned gravity fed real local ales

Real ale (gravity fed), oak beams, inglenook fireplace, good home cooking... what more could you ask for in an English pub in the middle of the countryside? Well done Victor and Susan for putting traditional free houses back on the map
